Meru County residents from the Nyambene region in the county have pleaded with President Uhuru Kenyatta to initiate talks with the visiting President of the Republic of Tanzania Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan concerning Miraa market in her country.

The residents who depend on Miraa farming for their livelihoods are taking advantage of the ongoing bilateral talks between the government of Kenya and that of the neighbouring Tanzania by asking the president to include Miraa market in Tanzania in their talk.

The Miraa cash crop has been facing challenges in matters of market since the crop was first banned in London, England. The market deteriorated further when Netherlands followed suit and prohibited the crop in their country.

Things became worse early last year when the largest market for the crop in Somalia was closed following the deteriorating bilateral trade ties between the country and Kenya. Since then, the crop has lost its value by great margin something that has left the crop growing community with a lot of financial struggles.

According to the farmers of the stimulant crop, a market for the crop in Tanzania will help them revive their source of livelihood greatly.
