It has been a priority of government to improve the dissemination of quality healthcare to citizens across the length and breath of the country. Works toward the achievement of universal health coverage started way back from the time of Kwame Nkrumah, from independence to date. As part of the measures taken by the J. A Kufuor led government to improve the access and delivery of quality healthcare, they introduced the National Health Insurance Scheme which tends to cover and seek financial protection for beneficiaries at a lower premium fee. It has really helped citizens a lot and the authority is till working on improving the coverage of services of the scheme.

Some weeks ago, the authority announced the addition of free cancer screening and care for beneficiaries of the scheme with the above condition. Another package is yet to be added to cater for mentally challenged beneficiaries for it has come to the observation of the authority that, seeking for mental health in the country is very expensive hence causes neglect of such victims, reporting from Peace FM Online via their official twitter page.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has indicated that efforts are underway to include mental health conditions in an insurance package, under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority, Dr Okoe Boye said this at the inauguration of a new board for the Mental Health Authority (MHA). It will be of great benefit if it comes to pass and proves effective for it will go a long way to reduce the number of mentally challenged individuals walking about on streets causing harm to others and this will also help transform them back into productive members in the society and country at large.
