Formally the College of Technology Education (COLTEK) and the College of Agriculture (CAGRIC), respectfully the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of the University of Education, Winneba have been carved out to form a new university. Parliament passed the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development Bill that legally confirmed university status on the Kumasi and Mampong campuses of the UEW. The university is named after the astute politician, lawyer and renowned industrialist, the late Appiah Minka.
The Akenten Appiah Minka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development is intended to spearhead government's vision to enhance job creation and industrialization, that hinges on Technical and Vocational Education (TVET). The educational institution can boast of a student population of about thirty thousand offering the various programs the school offers. The Kumasi Campus, the main campus of the newest university, offers programs such as Bsc Accounting ( Education), Bsc Management (Education), Bsc Mathematics (Education), Bsc English Language (Education), Bsc Information Technology (Education), Bsc Social Studies with Economics and Bsc Economics with Social Studies ,as well as training teachers in vertically all technical disciplines. The Mampong campuse however specialises in the agriculture and natural sciences such as Bsc Chemistry (Education), Bsc Physics (Education), Bsc Agribusiness and other science related education program.
