Five peoples have died in an accident which occurred at Obretema a town in the Suhum Municipality on the Accra-kumasi Highway on Sunday.The deceased were on board a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GW 7444 – 21 which was headed towards Accra from Kumasi.The incident, according to the police, occurred at about 2:20 pm when the offside rear tyre of the bus burst while the vehicle was in motion.In the process, the driver, 35-year-old Eric Ohemang, lost control of the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to somersault and finally land in a ditch.Three males and two females died on the spot, while the injured were taken to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.
The accident involved two Kia Grandbird buses with registration numbers GT 5629-19 and GE 5510-15, one of which was a VIP bus.The dead, which included the driver and mate of the VIP bus, were made up of 13 males and three females.
According to the police, upon reaching a section of the highway at Akyem Asafo, the VIP bus driver encountered another Kia Grandbird bus that was heading towards Kumasi that had undertaken a wrongful overtaking.
In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the VIP bus veered off the road but the oncoming bus that had undertaken the wrongful overtaking could not anticipate the action of the VIP bus, also veered off the road, and subsequently collided with the VIP bus.
16 dead as 2 KIA Granbird buses collide on Accra-Kumasi highway
Sixteen people have died after two KIA Granbird buses they were travelling in collided at the Akim Asafo stretch of the Accra Kumasi highway.
The passengers from both vehicles comprising 13 males and 3 females died on the spot.
Several passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Suhum Government Hospital and Akim Asafo Health Center for treatment.According to the police, the unfortunate incident happened at about 1:30 am on Friday with the driver of a KIA Granbird bus with registration number GT 5629-18 being one of the casualties.
They say upon reaching a section of the road at Akim Asafo Junction, he made an unsafe overtaking without observing traffic from the opposite direction.
In the process, he crashed head-on with another KIA Granbird bus with registration number GE 5510-15, driver also now deceased which was coming from Kumasi direction.
The police say the bodies were removed and deposited at Suhum Government Hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy.
Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service and Abundance Services from Suhum, Bunso, Kibi and Ayensuano were on hand to assist the police.
The Suhum Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), District Police Patrol team and Kibi MTTD Police Command were also at the scene directing traffic.
The accident vehicles were towed from the scene to a safer place for the free flow of traffic.
