1. SARS in Nigeria carried out 82 extra-judicial executions in 3 years - Amnesty International reveals.

Amnesty International has criticized the police for allegedly failing to prosecute members of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad whom it accused of engaging in torture of suspects.

The group noted that the squad had continued to use torture and other ill-treatment to execute, punish, and extract information from suspects.

In a new report, ‘Time to End Impunity,’ released on Thursday, Amnesty International said it documented at least 82 cases of torture, ill-treatment, and extra-judicial executions by SARS between January 2017 and May 2020.

It said the victims are predominantly males between the ages of 18 and 35, from low-income backgrounds and vulnerable groups.

The Director of Amnesty International in Nigeria, Osai Ojigho, said in a statement, "The complete failure of Nigerian authorities to bring an end to the gross human rights violations perpetrated by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad or to bring any SARS officer to justice is shocking and unacceptable."

2. Why we shut down Nigerian Embassy building in Germany - Federal Government reveals.

The Federal Government has said it shut down a building housing the Embassy of Nigeria in Berlin, Germany in order to allow thorough disinfection of the building.

In a statement this Friday, the Embassy said the move was necessary to guarantee the safety of its staff and the visiting public amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It dispelled reports that the building was shut down due to the non-payment of rent, stressing that the property belongs to the Government of Nigeria.

3. Nigeria lost a progressive in Ajimobi - APC governors says, as they mourn Ajimobi.

The Progressive Governors Forum has on Friday, joined the government and people of Oyo State to mourn the death of the Deputy National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Senator Abiola Ajimobi.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Abubakar Bagudu, on behalf of his colleagues, the PGF said it received the news of his demise with a heavy heart and gratitude to God.

The PGF is the umbrella body of all governors elected on the platform of the APC.

Bagudu said, "We received the death of His Excellency, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi with heavy heart and gratitude to Allah (SWT) for a life well blessed.

We, the Progressive Governors Forum, join the family, people and government of Oyo State and the nation to pray for the repose of the soul of our dear and beloved Sen. Abiola Ajimobi."

"His death is a loss to the nation and the Nigerian progressive community.

We pray to God Almighty to grant the family the fortitude to bear this heavy loss. May Allah reward all the good work of Sen. Ajimobi, forgive his limitations and bless what he left behind.

May the soul of Sen. Abiola Ajimobi rest in peace!", He concluded.

4. PGF Director-General praises Buhari NEC meeting.

Mr Salihu Lukman,  the Director-General, Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) has lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for summoning the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting towards ending the crisis rocking the party.

Lukman, who said this a statement in Abuja on Friday, said that the President displayed excellent democratic credentials to solve the problem.

“We should be able to respond by acknowledging properly the commendable leadership of the President in this challenging moment.

“Without attempting to compel or force anyone, he was able to broker peace in the party,” PGF director-general said.

He said that instead of relying on crude method, the president adhered to conventional democratic processes of allowing NEC members of to decide on various recommendations.

5. World Bank commits $20million for Dry land Farming research and development in Kano State.

The World Bank has committed the sum of $20million as a grant to the Centre for Dryland Agriculture, Bayero University, Kano State, to facilitate research and development activities.

The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yahuza Mohammed disclosed this today being Friday, while signing a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU between the Centre and Dantata Foods and Allied Products Limited.

Yahuza said the center was one of seven others in the country which got the grant given in three trenches following the significant achievements the centre had recorded in research and innovations.

According to him he said, "Out of seven centres that were renewed in Nigeria, our Centre for Dryland Agriculture, CDA was one of those successful.

The centre initially got the grant of $8million from World Bank, under the extension we got $5million while the new center is going to get $6million. So we’re getting close to $20million for research and development through the university."

Professor Yahuza also said that the signing of the MoU between the centre and the company is a welcome development as it would go a long way in promoting research for the development of agriculture in the country.

6. If you violate Wedding guidelines, you pay 10million Naira fine - Rivers State government declares.

Rivera State Government has announced a 10million Naira fine for any couple in the state that defaults on the state COVID-19 marriages guidelines.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, made the announcement following a State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, which was presided over by Governor Nyesom Wike.

Nsirim said the state had opened a window for prospective couples to be joined together in marriage, but must abide by the state guidelines.

He said that henceforth, prospective couple must get an approval from the governor, after applying through the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Inime Chiwenwo-Aguma.

He added that all weddings and marriages in the state must have a maximum attendance of 50 persons.

The commissioner noted that church weddings must be conducted between 9am and noon and traditional weddings, between 4pm and 7pm without any form of reception, which would be supervised by a representative of the ministry, present at the venue.
