It is appearing that the former First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Mahama is not ready to refund the allowances she received whilst in office anytime soon. Since the issue broke, her name has been mentioned on several occasions but she has refused to comment on the matter. For now, nobody knows her stand but Ghanaians are piling pressure on her to also make a refund. As the Debate is still unfolding, a popular Member of Parliament in Ghana has muddied that waters. Speaking in an interview with Philip Osei Bonsu, the legislature for the people of Builsa South Constituency, Mr. Clement Apaak indicated that the calls for Lordina to pay back her allowances are bogus.
Dr. Clement Apaak is one of the plaintiffs who have dragged the entire emoluments brouhaha to the Supreme Court for proper interpretation. But there is a U-turn after the current First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo Addo, and the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia rejected the salaries and decided to pay back all the allowances they have received since assuming offices. The new music from the popular Member of Parliament is that Lordina Mahama received her allowances legitimately and cannot be forced to make a refund.
The public discourse is now shifting from allowances to salaries. They are now indicating that the previous allowances have already been paid and the former First Ladies, including Lordina Mahama, cannot be forced to refund. It has also been established that the challenge was with the salaries and not the allowances“. It is a bogus call to make because nobody has forced anyone to refund the allowances they have already received”. Mr. Clement Apaak indicated.
According to him, the entire country is trying to mix apples with oranges because the laws of the country permitted Lordina Mahama to receive the allowance and cannot be held responsible. The argument of the National Democratic Congress has been with the salaries and has nothing to do with allowances.
Interesting days are ahead as the debate is about to get heated. From the position of Mr. Clement Apaak, Lordina Mahama received her allowances lawfully but they had a problem with Rebecca Akufo Addo and Samira Bawumia receiving the same emoluments. The NPP communicators are lacing their boots to ensure the issue is well debated. For now, we can only ask the former first lady to begin preparing her cheque before the entire issue escalates. Mr. John Dramani Mahama can lead the fight and settle the matter once and for all. But we must not forget that refunding the allowances is a voluntary decision.
