Cyriel Dessers, days after scoring for the first time since December for Racing Genk, on Thursday night scored again as Genk drubbed Royal Antwerp 4-0 in the Belgian Jupiler League Championship Group to clinch a ticket into next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Genk could still end up as champions of Belgium if they beat Club Brugge on Sunday after Brugge played out to a 3-3 draw against Anderlecht, also on Thursday night.
The Nigerian international, who grabbed the game-winning goal for Genk in their 2-1 win over Anderlecht last time around, came off the bench to grab his side’s fourth and final goal of the game in a match in which Kristian Thorstvedt emerged as his side’s hero with a hat-trick.
His Genk and Nigeria teammate Paul Onuachu was not among the goal scorers against Antwerp but provided two assists for Thorstvedt before being replaced in the 74th minute with Dessers.
But less than a minute following his introduction, Dessers ran onto a through ball from Junya Ito, then shrugged off the challenge from two Antwerp defenders before slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper.
Dessers also scored against Antwerp earlier in December in a 4-2 win for Genk. It was his last strike before going 18 games without a goal; a bad run the 26-year-old ended in last weekend’s win over Anderlecht.
