"Check out what the Sundowns coach had to say after his team won the Nedbank Cup."
Mngqithi: We needed high-octane mentality.
The Nedbank Cup final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants was praised for its high level of competition by Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
After a last-gasp winner by Thapelo Morena in extra time gave Sundowns a 2-1 victory against the defending champions, Sundowns were able to complete the domestic treble and win all three titles.
Mngqithi claims that he had a premonition that players coming off the bench would end up winning the game after Themba Zwane and Morena played such a significant role.
According to what Mngqithi told SuperSport TV, "No man, I was speaking to 'Dance' [Dan Malesela] and this is one match I still want to go and see because I think the level of competitiveness was really good."
"The competition was played at a high level of intensity by both sides; first we pushed, then they pushed us farther. We produced some very good opportunities as a result of our strong press, and we ought to have put the game away in the first half.
"Unfortunately, [Thabiso] Kutumela was unable to take one, and Gaston [Sirino] was unable to take two, and from then the game devolved into something that we did not want to see.
"But one was extremely glad to see exactly what one has spoken to the players because we warned them that this game is not going to be won by the people who start it. One was very delighted to see precisely what one has said to the players. A high-octane mentality is required because the game is going to be played at a high level of difficulty.
"Because those who start it shouldn't be able to finish it, but those who finish it will be able to assist the team that was already starting to feel exhausted. We knew it was going to be difficult for them to take the dose because they have a special team that is really dangerous, and we saw a number of players in the second half who were cramping up.
"[From] outside the team is not of the same caliber, therefore I am very delighted that Morena scored, but more than anything else I want to thank my colleagues coaches and my medical department. [From] outside the team is not the same quality.
"My conditioning staff, our analysis staff, our management, the board, the President and the Chairman of the club, as well as the restaurant staff, the security crew at the gate, the grass maintenance staff, and the kit guys who make sure we always look good are all important to me.
"I would want to extend my gratitude to everyone who is a part of the club, including the yellow nation. I believe that they contributed to the proper momentum that allowed us to play this game with the appropriate level of energy. Thank you very much for providing the drum beat; you may not be aware of how beneficial it is."
