Arsenal has always had good midfielders since the reign of Arsene Wenger. Looking back, one can remember when the likes of Patrick Vieira, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Robert Pires, Tomas Rosicky, Abou Diaby, Gilberto Silva and so on dazzled at the old Highbury Stadium and the Emirates Stadium.
After Arsene Wenger's departure, his successor Unai Emery signed up French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient FC for about 7 million pounds. After some excellent displays by the Frenchman for Arsenal, he was loaned out of the club by Mikel Arteta who succeeded Unai Emery after a poor run of results.
Matteo Guendouzi was loaned because he refused to apologize after grabbing Brighton and Hove Albion striker Neal Maupay by the throat after a game. Right now, Matteo Guendouzi is playing for Olympique Marseille on loan and will possibly be signed by the French club due to a purchase option in his contract.
Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga was signed to be the replacement of Matteo Guendouzi and the former Anderlecht midfielder has also played excellently for the club. But the million-dollar question is that "Is Albert Sambi Lokonga better than Matteo Guendouzi?".
Matteo Guendouzi is more of a recycling type midfielder. He is good at retaining the ball, consolidating possession and driving forward but he wasn't good positionally to prevent counterattacks and was very slow to get back into position when he lost possession higher up the pitch.
Albert Sambi Lokonga on the other hand is also good at retaining the ball, consolidating possession and driving forward. And he is also good in his positioning to prevent counterattacks but he tends to dally on the ball when farther up the pitch.
Both players are talented players and could become world-class in a few years. But I would pick Albert Sambi Lokonga as the better player because the modern game demands defensive awareness as well as attacking capabilities.
