Basel are a club with a rich recent European history by Swiss standards and they’ll be seeking to get their UEFA Europa Conference League campaign off to an emphatic start against Partizani Tirana this Thursday night.
Patrick Rahmen’s side have been eclipsed by Young Boys as the dominant force in Switzerland over recent seasons, hence the half to their regular Champions League appearances which were almost perennial from the early noughties until their last domestic title triumph in 2017.
Runners-up again last term, the addition of this new competition provides Basel with a superb opportunity to make a deep run on the continental stage and they start the campaign amongst a clutch of sides firmly reckoned into the ‘dark horses’ category.
The visit of Partizani Tirana to St Jakob-Park, who dispatched Moldovan minnows Sfintul Ghoerghe in the last round, should pose next to no problem for Basel. They’re generally dominant on their home turf and won their last four league games here in 2020/21 without conceding.
The Albanians are a marked step below the majority of teams which Basel encounter in the Super League and we’re backing Rahmen’s charges to post a win and clean sheet this week. It could be a question of ‘how many?’ for the Swiss and our prediction is four in the correct score market.
Prediction:Both teams to score.
