The Late and First President of the Republic of Ghana Dr Kwame Nkrumah is a Gem and an African legend. He is just phenomenal. His achievements are incomparable and that makes him the best President that the Ghanaian people have ever had.
Most people on social media and other platforms, be it the press media or the television have been saying that the change of dates, name and meaning of the 21st September celebration or founder's day is not right.
Their opinion is that, the former President Kwame Nkrumah is the founder of Ghana and therefore the name that has been changed from Founder's day to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial day changes our history. They will rather call 21st September Founder's day instead of the current name.
Of course, they have a point to bring this up beside we used to celebrate this day as Founder's day before the incumbent President Nana Akufo Addo changed it in 2019. But let us try as much as possible and recognized other people who fought and helped liberate Ghanaians from our colonial masters.
Dr Kwame Nkrumah was indeed a great man, he died for us, he could have slowed our Independence like other people wanted to. But he wanted us to be free from slavery and the inhumane treatment given to us in our own homes. That alone qualifies him to be the best President but he can never be the founder of Ghana because he wasn't the founder of Ghana.
As Patriotic Ghanaians and lovers of the truth should make things very clear for the younger ones growing to know the essence of been patriotic and freedom fighters. Dr Kwame Nkrumah did not just wake up one day and drove the British away nor was he even born when slavery started in Ghana.
Some great men and women were in the picture before he was even born. People died trying to drive them from our lands. People died in wars against the British and even other European countries before the British.
Dr Kwame Nkrumah is an icon not for only Ghana but for the entire African continent. He had wanted to bring all Africans and together and hence place Ghanaians in a better place. That made him to say, "our Independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total Liberation of Africa."
He achieve a lot for Ghanaians but he didn't do it alone. A lot of Ghanaians also toiled and lost their lives for us to be where we are today. Let us talk about the 'BIG SIX' of which Dr Kwame Nkrumah was included, they all risked their lives just to make Ghana a better for us, so they also deserve to be recognized.
So changing the date and name to recognize others and reserving Dr Kwame Nkrumah dignity and his achievements on his date of birth was the right thing. 21st September is Kwame Nkrumah Memorial day and not founder's day.
