Tummy time is the technique of placing your baby on their stomachs for brief periods while they are awake and being observed. Tummy time helps new borns build the muscles needed to lift their heads and, eventually, sit up, crawl, and walk. However, it is always important to keep your baby awake and under close supervision when performing this technique.

 How to do tummy time

1 Tummy time is best done after your baby has woken up from a nap or after a diaper change.

2 Make a small clearing on the floor and place your baby on his tummy on a clean towel or playmat.

3 Surround your baby with a couple of his or her favorite toys to keep her attention.

4 Try to keep your baby's belly down for three to five minutes. You can do this twice a day.

5 As your baby grows accustomed to stomach time, gradually increase the length and frequency of sessions throughout the day.

It is important to never lay your infant down on his stomach to sleep because sleeping on the stomach is known to increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

2 Allows your infant to use muscles other than those on his back. By doing push-ups, your baby will strengthen the muscles in his arms, shoulders, upper back, and neck, allowing him to eventually lift his head.

3 It lays the groundwork for motor skills such as reaching, rolling over, sitting up, and crawling.
