COVID-19 outbreak puts Kaizer Chiefs out of order [Details]

Date: 03/12/2021

Kaizer Chiefs has been looking forward to continue their good form in the Dstv Premiership when they face Cape Town City FC on Saturday, but the club unfortunately suffered a defeat to Covid-19 which has now left the club with a outbreak dilemma on their hands. Due to the corona virus pandemic always growing stronger and mutating day by day from one variant to the other, the Covid-19 protocol of wearing masks, sanitising and taking temperatures was done on a daily basis.

By following protocol, the club has picked up signs of the Covid-19 infections when they tested players and staff and a number of no less than 31 tested positive for the virus which has now put an obstacle in the club's path. The club has been monitoring players and staff on a daily and tests has been done regularly and the latest results are concerning. Due to the high number of positive cases at the club, Kaizer Chiefs has requested for the PSL to call off the match against Cape Town City, and the three matches which follows.

"Player and staff at Kaizer Chiefs Football Club have been closely monitored for symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic and have been tested regularly. More personnel tested positive this week as we were preparing for Saturday's game", the club said in a statement. "As a result of this outbreak that has seen no less 31 people test positive for COVID-19, the Kaizer Chiefs village is temporarily closed until next week".

"Given the situation, the medical team have conducted contact tracing of primary contacts of those who tested positive and have instructed all players, members of the technical team and staff, including those who tested negative, who are primary contacts to quarantine as per COVID protocols ", said the club.

"The club has written to the Premier Soccer League to request for a postponement of the four upcoming games in December against Cape Town City, Golden Arrows, Sekhukhune FC and Royal AM to avoid risk of infection and further spread of the virus and allow those affected to recover and complete their quarantine period before they can play against other teams ", read the statement.

"We view this as a case of force majuere as what the club is experiencing as a consequence of COVID and the protocols it is obliged to implement, the total is beyond the control of the Club. The Club does not at the moment have sufficient players nor technical team to constitute a team. We have appealed to the League to seriously consider the matter for the sake of everyone's health and safety because there are many other people involved in organising a game. The team will be closely monitored by our legal team, while we continue to maintain COVID risk mitigation protocols",concluded the statement.

This spells out bad news for supporters if the PSL is to postpone all four of Kaizer Chiefs upcoming fixtures meaning there will be no festive matches to enjoy. Kaizer Chiefs is in great form and supporters was supposedly waiting for more action, but due to COVID-19 protocols it's understood why we will miss the club's festive matches.

May the club get back to good health so that football may return to the fans.
