If you thought seeing Orlando Pirates missing out on winning the CAF Confederation Cup on Friday was shocking, then you haven't seen their trophy finals record. It's truly sad that a massive club like Pirates haven't been winning trophies continuously. This is something their supporters have been complaining about recently as they feel that they're pulling off mediocre performances. When Pirates lost in the CAF Confederation Cup final against RS Berkane at Akpabio International Stadium on Friday, there was major concerns about their trophy record. Pirates have been able to make it to the finals successfully, however they're not able to win the ultimate trophy.
The Buccaneers were recently defeated 5-4 on penalties by Berkane to be crowned the 2021/22 CAF Confederation Cup champions. Even though the game finished on a 1-1 draw, but they couldn't leave it like that since it was a cup final. Hence, they had to go to the penalty shootout to determine the winner of the continental trophy. This was the third time the Buccaneers failed to win the CAF trophy, despite reaching the finals. In 2013 they lost against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League and then in 2015 they were defeated by Etoile de Sahel in the CAFCC.
Then when it comes to the domestic competition, Pirates have won two trophies - against Bidvest Wits in the Nedbank Cup and Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 Cup out of eight finals. Surely, the Soweto giants have pulled off a horrible record in their trophy finals. As they seem to not pull off superb performances when it matters. "2 - Orlando Pirates have been victorious in just 2 of the 11 Cup finals they've participated in since their last PSL title, finishing as runners-up on 9 occasions during this period. Hoodoo?" wrote @OptaJabu on Twitter.
