The diet you eat has direct connection with your fertility level. It is largely responsible for determining the quality and quantity of sperm count in your semen.

1.Trans Fats

Trans-fatty acids, or trans-fats, are fats that are formed through an industrial process whereby hydrogen atoms are added to vegetable oil to create a semi-solid food product.

Trans fats are considered harmful to cardiovascular health, especially trans-fats that come from unnatural sources (e.g., hydrogenated oils in processed foods).

However, what’s often overlooked is the impact that trans-fats can have on testosterone levels and sperm count.

2. Processed meats

This is not surprising—recent studies link processed meats to all sorts of illnesses. Processed meats include hot dogs, salami, beef jerky, bacon, etc. I get it; they’re delicious. Yes, bacon can make anything taste better. In the case of sperm, several studies connect eating processed red meat with decreased sperm counts and altered sperm motility. It’s not clear how these foods affect sperm, but it appears the effect isn’t a positive one. Of note, these same studies did not find an association between eating chicken and reduced sperm health

Over the years, studies have found a higher chance of sperm count and sperm quality problems among men who are heavy smokers, and additional research suggests that smoking negatively affects sperm chromosomes. Interestingly enough, smoking may even impact the DNA of the sperm — best to avoid it

4. High Fat Dairy Products

As a child, you were most likely encouraged to drink milk to grow and get strong. When it comes to male fertility, not all dairy is created equal. Studies have shown that even three portions of full-fat dairy food a day have led to men having poorer sperm quality. According to research, young men who eat more than three slices of cheese may be putting their fertility at risk. On the other hand, a low dairy product like low fat milk was linked to higher sperm concentration and motility.

The bottom line

Following a balanced diet while introducing more healthy options and avoiding those unhealthy ones is likely to help you lose weight. There is a strong correlation between being overweight (BMI>25) and unhealthy sperm so losing weight can be beneficial if your BMI is above that threshold. Getting some exercise regularly (at least 3 times a week) alongside improving your diet will help you get towards being at a healthy weight and therefore improve the quality of your sperm

These changes are not guaranteed to bring success and we do advise you to have a sperm test if you have been trying to conceive for 6-12 months without success. However, making these changes to your lifestyle will give you a better chance of producing healthy sperm and therefore the best chance of a successful conception
