How Obaseki Also Did 2 Things Buhari Did Earlier As He Finally Unveils Nominees To Form His Cabinet

Governor Godwin Obaseki has finally appointed nominees that will be part of the Edo State Executive Council as he hopes to form his cabinet.

Obaseki was reelected for a second term in office after a keenly contested governorship election in Edo State. That election was a true test of popularity between him and his estranged godfather, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole who heavily backed Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the contest. But at the end of the it all, Obaseki who contested under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP won the election. The next was for Obaseki to form his cabinet after he was sworn in. That did not happen as expected. This article will discuss how Obaseki did two things that President Muhammadu Buhari was blasted for doing after he won reelection as President in 2019.

One, Obaseki failed to form cabinet for several months. It would be recalled that President Buhari waited for several months without forming his cabinet after winning second term. This made several Nigerians, civil society groups and the opposition PDP to blast him accusing him of running a 'one man show''. Like Buhari, Obaseki waited for several months before releasing names of people that would be members of his cabinet.

Obaseki has been criticized by some Edo people, civil society groups and the even the opposition party in the state, the APC, who accused him of running the state like a sole administrator. The only difference between Buhari and Obaseki is the length of time it took them to appoint members of their cabinet. While it took Buhari six months, Obaseki waited for 10 months to do that as he was sworn in on November 12th, 2020.

The second one is that Obaseki failed to attach portfolios to his nominees. This was done by Buhari too. The list of Obaseki's nominees are contained in a report by Ripples News. From the list, Obaseki only added their LGAs but no portfolio was attached to any of them. This was exactly what Buhari did. Well, many people criticized Buhari for omitting the portfolios or assigned Ministries the nominees would head. They argued that it made it hard for the Senate to properly screen them. In this regard, if their assigned Ministries were added, the question to ask them will be easier to come up with by the Senators.

They would have asked each nominee his or her plans in the Ministry in view of the current realities on ground regarding the challenges each Ministry is facing. But, that was not the case as the screening was done somehow without the knowledge of which Ministry each nominee would occupy at last. Now, Obaseki did exactly the same thing Buhari did as he failed to assign Ministries to his nominees for reasons best known to him.
