Deputy President William Ruto was the target of attacks and criticism after claiming to be the new political kingpin of Mount Kenya. Ruto made the remarks in response to his main presidential rival ODM boss Raila Odinga's efforts to court the region.
He asserted that he is the man in charge, with allies such as Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua stating that those wishing to vote in Central Kenya must do so through him.
The remarks, however, have been dismissed by President Uhuru Kenyatta's allies from the same region who are now campaigning for the former Premier.
They include Kieni MP Kanini Kega, who laughed at the DP and his allies' claims while accompanying Raila to Naivasha, Nyahururu, Subukia, and Nakuru.
He stated that only the people, not any other politician or any of Raila's troops, will be able to end his presidency if they are dissatisfied with him.
Raila expressed hope that the Kikuyu community will support him, noting that he has never clashed with the people and has previously collaborated with them.
