Sundowns reveals the reason behind certain players not getting game time at Chloorkop

Mamelodi Sundowns is filled with quality and talented players on and off the field. It’s difficult for certain players to break into the starting line-up and this is something that’s been visible to the football fraternity. As they constantly ask about a few Sundowns players that have barely played a single match in the 2022/22 season. Even though some of them do make it to the matchday squad, however, fail to be brought on by their technical team. Now, this has led to the Brazilians co-coach Rulani Mokwena to talk about the main reason behind certain players are not playing at Chloorkop. Also, he took the time to give credit where it’s due, when it comes to the professionalism of some players that lack game time at Masandawana.

Mokwena stated that the only thing that’s stopping other players from getting game time is that football rules only permit clubs to use eleven players on the field. Otherwise, if that wasn’t the case, then Downs would be fielding most of their key players. “Why is Gaston not playing? It’s very difficult because you’d have to ask yourself why Neo Maema is playing and then of course why is [Thabiso] Kutumela playing? Sometimes there are players who are not playing because we can only play 11. The one thing I can say is huge compliments for their professionalism,” said Mokwena speaking to the media.

Sundowns can field three different teams and still win trophies, due to the depth that they have in their squad. This is the luxury that their technical team have during the tough times of Coronavirus. Also, Downs have to compete in the DStv Premiership and CAF Champions League which makes their squad flexible for any challenge. Mokwena has stated that it’s not easy for the likes of Gaston Sirino, Aubrey Modiba, Lesedi Kapinga, Sibusiso Vilakazi and even George Maluleka to be on the bench, rather than the starting eleven. “Gaston, And he’s not the only one. There’s Vila [Sibusiso Vilakazi], Aubrey Modiba and even players like Lesedi Kapinga, George Maluleka. These players and it’s not easy. You understand that when you come to training in a space where possibly I am not going to be playing, possibly I am not going to be part of the team, but I still go on with the business of training,” said Mokwena speaking to the media after Sundowns 3-2 win over Royal AM.
