The Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai and his counterparts from Rivers State, Nyesom Wike have an opportunity to make a record in 2023 that the country returns to vote new leaders to govern the country.
Right now, El-Rufai has a good record in Kaduna State and he may make a bigger one in 2023. At this moment, it is Kaduna State that has a female deputy governor in the whole of northern country.
There are 19 states in the region and only the Kaduna State deputy governor is a female. If Mallam Nasir El-Rufai decides to sponsor his deputy, Hadiza Balarabe, for the seat of Kaduna State governor. He has power to influence the decision of the All Progresives Congress (APC) to nominate the deputy for the top job in Kaduna State.
Actually, El-Rufai won't be up for reelection in 2023 because by that time he would have completed his second term in office. And the Constitution doesn't allow a third term in office. And in the history of Kaduna State, there has never been a female governor.
Secondly, Mr. Nyesom Wike stands to make a fantastic record come 2023. He will leave power upon completion of his own second term as well. He was first elected in 2015 and by the time the country goes for general elections, he won't be contesting as a candidate in the governorship election.
But he can make history by handing over to his deputy, Ipabilo Banigo. For the first time in the history of the state, there has been no female deputy governor until Wike decided to break the barriers and made the woman his deputy at that time.
Wike has become one of the most powerful forces in the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the extent that he can make the party leaders do his biddings. Now, he can tip and nominate his deputy Ipabilo Banigo to take over in 2023. And he will be making history as the first Rivers State governor to hand over to a female governor.
In a nutshell, Mr. Nyesom Wike and Mallam Nasir El-Rufai have a clear opportunity to make history in 2023. They should simply back their respective deputy governors to take over from them in the states (Rivers and Kaduna).
