@elvyoira

A miscarriage is a loss of woman's pregnancy before the 20th week. Most miscarriages happen in the first trimester before the 12th week. The most common cause of a miscarriage is a genetic abnormality in the embryo.

Many women have a miscarriage early in their pregnancy without even realising it. They may just think they are having a heavy period. The symptoms are usually vaginal bleeding and lower tummy pain. It is important to see your doctor if you have signs of a miscarriage.

Routine activities such as exercise does not cause miscarriage. Women older than 35 years of age have a higher risk of having a miscarriage than younger women.

Women who have had two or more consecutive miscarriages are at a higher risk of a miscarriage. Smoking, use of alcohol and illicit drugs also increase the risk of a miscarriage. Being underweight or overweight has also been linked with an increased risk of a miscarriage.

Following a miscarriage it is a good idea to wait until you are both physically and emotionally ready before trying to conceive again.
