CLUB BRUGGE VS UNION GILLOISE.

Thursday’s clash at Jan Breydalstadion is almost a ‘must not lose’ affair for champions Club Brugge as they try to eat into Union Saint Gilloise’s nine-point lead in First Division A. The promoted club have sustained an incredible run of form and consistency over the past six and a half months, putting themselves in pole position for their first title since the 1930s.

Les Unionistes have fared better on their travels than at home, dropping only five points on the road and winning at fourth-placed Anderlecht and fifth-placed Gent. Their early-season home clash with Brugge ended in defeat, but the visitors stole it with a stupendous late goal after Union had given them a big scare.

Based on form, this will be close, as Blauw-Zwart are unbeaten at home this season with four wins from the last six on their turf. The oddsmakers make Brugge a shade of odds against, though, which opens up the double chance market for those of us that believe Union SG are no flash in the pan.

Club Brugge have the edge on title-winning nous and more quality in their best starting eleven, but Phillipe Clement’s thinking appears muddled recently as he has been deploying one of his best strikers – Noa Lang – as a wing-back. He could be without up to three potential starters for this one as Tajon Buchanan is on international duty, Jack Hendry is suspended – pending an appeal – and Stanley N’Soki doubtful with a calf injury.

Prediction:Both teams to score.
