FG Clears Air on Flights Resumption And Interstate Movement, Reveals Date of Announcement

The ban on Flights and Interstate Movement is of no doubt a known issue as it has affected both the economy and the country as a whole.

Yesterday (Thursday), the Federal Government has said that it will announce a date for the re-opening of the nation’s airways and commencement of commercial domestic flight next week which will as well determine the status of Interstate Movement in the country.

Captain Musa Nuhu, the Director-General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), who made this known on Thursday in Abuja at the 46th joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19, said that since the last announcement that Sunday, 21st of June is no longer feasible for the opening of the airports, that they have had significant progress in the readiness of the industry to restart.

Captain Nuhu explained that though some gaps have been closed but however, they still have a few gaps within the aviation ecosystem and this will be closed hopefully in the next couple of days. He said the sector was stalling in the flights’ resumption because it still needs to close some gaps.

According to him, the Aviation is already a very complex system on its own and by the time the COVID-19 pandemic is added to it, it complicates a very complex system. He said after closing the few remaining gaps in the aviation ecosystem, they will start, as they will not take any chance since they are almost there.

The captain further stated that a dry run test would be conducted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja as part of the preparation to commence the flight operation, adding that they must strictly pay attention to the issues of technical safety and health safety of all stakeholders. He said a dry run test of both Lagos and Abuja airport which is coming up on Saturday, is one of the things they are going to use to close some of the gaps.

The captain also added that after the dry runs, they will observe the gaps that might still be there and close them. And after all this is done, a restart date will be announced next week.
