Nigeria Set To Receive First Batch Of The Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine

Nigeria is said to be set to receive 3.92 million doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine on Tuesday 2 March, 2021. This was revealed by Media Aide to President Muhammadu Buhari Bashir Ahmad in a tweet " Barring any change in the delivery plan, Nigeria is expected to receive four million doses of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccines on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force On COVID-19, SGF, Boss Mustapha, disclosed that tonight."

The Vaccine is said to be made available through the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access(COVAX) which is an initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 Vaccines led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organization, the Coalition For Epidemic Preparedness Innovations and others.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency said"The delivery will mark the first arrival of COVID-19 Vaccine in the country and make Nigeria the next West African Country to benefit from the COVAX facility after Ghana and Cote d'voire (Ivory Coast)."

More Vaccines up to a total of 16 million doses are expected to be received through COVAX working to provide Vaccines to poorer countries. COVAX aims to deliver at least two billion doses globally by the end of 2021.

Nigeria has so far recorded 155,417 cases and 1,905 deaths. It is also reported that a new virus variant has been discovered in the country, but researchers have not yet determined if it is a more contagious strain or more deadly than the original.

I hope the Vaccines will do magic and that lockdowns will disappear forever!
