Raila Odinga, the leader of the opposition Democratic Movement in Kenya (ODM), has chastised Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for depriving his deputy Caroline Karugu of her salary and benefits for more than two years.

"If you have a female deputy, treat her with respect and grant her rights. You should not have a deputy governor who is working and for whom you are not paying a salary. Shame... Shame on you!" He exclaimed.

Mr. Odinga was speaking to mourners at the burial of Mama Jacinta Wanjiku Karugu, Caroline Karugu's mother, in Nyeri.

Governor Kahiga had apologized earlier for the split with his deputy, but Mr. Odinga had already departed the event by the time he rose to speak.

"I wanted to say something to the governor while he was here."

Once again, he (Kahiga) has apologized and stated that he will do what he is supposed to do...

"However, this should not be used as an excuse. Don't disrespect our women," he warned.

"Our women must be treated with the dignity and respect that they are due. They are full citizens who pay taxes just like everyone else."

Dr. Karugu sued the county governor, Mutahi Kahiga, and the county secretary in September of last year, alleging that her salary was withheld and that she was refused access to her office.

She claimed in court that she was responsible for her own petrol, security, and other expenses incurred while on official duty.

At the same gathering, Odinga reaffirmed his commitment to the Azimio La Umoja movement, emphasizing his desire for peace and unity in the country.

Azimio La Umoja, a presidential contender for 2022, said he will ensure that no one is discriminated against because of their gender, age, or disability.

"This is a declaration of oneness that can even be found in the Bible. We can grow our country if we unite our people and become one people. This is the kind of unity we're looking for. There will be no discrimination based on gender, age, or the presence of people with disabilities. Our vision is exactly the type of thing we want in this country," he remarked.
