Kenyans will now need to dig deeper in their pockets in order to buy household items including food.

With the new East African Community (EAC) Common External Tariff taking effect from July 1st, 2022, the prices of food commodities that include meat, cooking oil and fish are expected to go up.

The new Tariff, which was unanimously agreed upon by the member states back in May, imposes a 35 percent levy on goods imported from outside the regional block.

EAC explained that this decision is driven by the need to promote local production and trade within member states of the regional trading bloc.

Food items that include eggs, honey, cereals, fruits, coffee and vegetables are also set to increase in price.

Fertilizers are also set to be affected. Items used for cinematography, photography, leather products, carpets, iron and steel will also increase in price.

Kenyans who also want to import their own cars will also need to dig deeper as the new Tariff also affect vehicle importation.
