Machakos creatives/artists will have to wait longer for payments after the department of tourism and culture declared it does not have funds to pay their dues over Covid-19.
Machakos Governor Dr Alfred Mutua Launched a Hollywood replica duped Machawood,Machakos Entertainment Center for Film, Media, Music and the Arts in 2013.
The initiative was set to generate 30,000 new jobs and Sh 500 million to Machakos County government.
However the creative have been up in arms with the devolved unit failure to pay them their dues in the last on year.
They participated in the Machakos Art fest which was held on 5th and 6th July 2019 and the County owes them Kshs. 418,500 and the Film fest which was held on 14th December 2019 and the County owes them Kshs. 1,200,000 from that event.
“The purpose of this letter is to inform you that due to COVID-19 effects,office operations have slowed down abit.However we wish to re-assure you that Machawood is commited to pay their monies as soon as normal business resumes,”read a letter by Machawood CEO Victor Muniafu.
This has seen the creative seek intervention from the Machakos County Assembly through a petition against the Department of Tourism and Culture for performances in the Machakos Art Fest and Film Fest.
Through the petition, the creatives claimed that they offered their services to the County Government of Machakos, Department of Tourism, and Culture on a contractual basis and have not received their payment for over eight months and others for two years.
“We participated in the Machakos Art fest which was held on 5th and 6th July 2019 and the County owes them sh 418,500 and the Film fest which was held on 14th December 2019 and the County owes us sh 1.2million from that event,”read the petition.
The creatives asked the County Assembly to engage the Department of Tourism and Culture with a view of ensuring that due payments are made and Investigate the matters raised on the Leadership of the Department of Tourism and Culture which they accused of arrogance and disrespect.
The Department of Tourism and Sports had a budget allocation of 103 million in the 2019/2020 Financial year for recurrent expenditure.
