A couple of months ago, when the 17 Governors of Southern States in Nigeria, met in Asaba and resolved to ban open grazing of cattle across the region, many Nigerians took turn in reacting differently to it. Recall that herdsmen have been accused of perpetrating various degrees of crimes across the country, leading to violent conflicts between them and villagers.

Despite the level of attacks and killings in the country allegedly carried out by armed herdsmen, the decision of the Southern Governors to ban open grazing, was strongly criticized, by some notable individuals from the Northern region. However, after the criticism of the Southern Governors, two Northern states have gone as far as banning cattle business in their states.

According to the Punch Newspaper, the Katsina and Niger states governments have banned cattle business, and movement of cows in their states. As obtained, the decision was informed by the need to curb the menace of attacks and killings in the states. This is coming at a time when the legality of the Southern Governors’ ban on open grazing in their region is being questioned.

Following this development, we may begin to wonder whether the Southern Governors have been vindicated. It should be recalled that the Nigeria Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, had described the resolution of the Southern Governors, as an infringement on the constitutional rights of the Herders. At the same time, the Miyetti Allah equally maintained that it would not comply with such a satanic law.

However, with Katsina and Niger states going as far as banning cattle markets, and movement of cattle in their respective states, as a security measure in the wake of incessant attacks and killings, one may not be wrong to say that, perhaps, the Southern Governors’ decision to ban open grazing across the Southern region, has been vindicated.
