Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated the day after Christmas Day. It is celebrated on 26 December thus being the second day of Christmastide. Boxing Day originated as a holiday to give gifts to the poor, but today, the day is primarily known for enjoyment such as going to the beach, excursions, parties, shopping etc. It originated from the United Kingdom and is celebrated in many countries all over the world. When the Boxing Day falls on weekday, it is declared a holiday. But when it falls on a weekend, the holiday is shifted to the next weekday.
The upcoming Boxing Day- 26 December 2020 falls on Saturday. In view of this, the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Interior has officially declared Monday December 28, 2020 as a public holiday for the Boxing Day celebrations.
In a statement signed by the Minister of Interior, Mr. Ambrose Dery, it says “The general public is hereby notified that Saturday, 26th December 2020 marks ‘Boxing day’ which is a statutory public holiday”
This is in line with the Executive Instrument (E.I), and in accordance with section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days, 2001 (Act 601) declaring Monday, 28th December 2020 as an Additional Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country.
