Opinion: 2 More Former PDP Governors Who Should Join APC Now

Before it is too late and their defections won't be celebrated, two former governors of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) had better carry their structure and join the leading APC. They need to follow the steps of other former governors who have traced their way to the APC.

The fanfare in the APC continues as the party ceaselessly welcomes powerful members of the People's Democratic Party into its fold. The same APC several people thought would crash within a short time is only prospering and thriving in politics of the country. How marvelous!

Now a former Oyo State governor, Mr. Christopher Alao Akala has identified himself with the APC. He knew that the best alternative in Nigerian politics of today is the APC. A politician will find it difficult without belonging to the APC. Hence, he decamped from the Action Democratic Party to the APC.

It must be clearly stated that Alao Akala was Oyo State governor on the PDP platform. He was elected while contesting as the PDP candidate. But he was unable to retain the ticket for eight years. He spent only a term.

And with his presence in the APC, he may struggle hard to get the APC ticket and slug it out with Mr. Seyi Makinde, the incumbent governor of the state, who will also be looking forward to winning his reelection in 2023.

Likewise, Mr. Gbenga Daniel has sat down to check the wave of politics not only in Ogun State, but also in the country, Nigeria. He has understudied the strength of the APC, hence he moved into the train of the party.

Gbenga Daniel was a governor of Ogun State using the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Even he was the national coordinator for the PDP and Atiku Abubakar's campaign organization in 2019. It is incredible that Gbenga Daniel, who fought with his sweat in 2019 to make a U-turn and leave the same PDP.

He must have seen the reality that the PDP is no longer a viable option for him. In Ogun State, Mr. Olusegun Osoba is on ground to foil any attempt of the PDP. He has been collaborating with the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for years now.

Mr. Ayodele Fayose needs to check his odds as well. He needs to move quickly before it is too late. The former Ekiti State governor has done a lot for the PDP and stood up for the party through thick and thin.

Rather than appreciating him, the party tends to relegate him by not allowing him to have full control of the Ekiti State chapter of the PDP. Till now both Ayodele Fayose and Senator Biodun Olujinmi are at loggerheads. They have continued to lay claim on the soul of the Ekiti PDP.

Mr. Fayose has a smooth relationship with Bola Tinubu. This will be a great avenue for him to quickly identify himself with the APC. Even he can become the APC leader in Ekiti State if he has anointing of Tinubu.

Secondly, Mr. Olusegun Mimiko needs to brace for the new wave of politics in Nigeria. From all indications, his Zenith Labour Party can't achieve anything in Ondo State let alone in the country.

He was a PDP governor in Ondo State. Although he won his first term bid through the Labour Party, he became more popular and influential through the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

A look at the 2020 governorship election in Ondo State will clearly show that the PDP has lost much ground in the state. The party and its candidate were able to claim only 2 out of 18 local government areas of the state. The margin between Eyitayo Jegede and Rotimi Akeredolu was really wide.

Mimiko's deputy, Ali Olanusi, has identified himself with the APC and he is staying relevant in the Ondo State as he continues to contribute to what happens in the party and state at large.
