Nigeria secured an 2-1 away victory over Cape Verde, the victory was unexpected due to the events that unfolded prior to the game, eight first team stars who ply their trade in the UK left the eagles camp, Iheanacho, Iwobi, Ndidi amongst others were among the players excused, Gernot Rohr's woes were compounded even further as Tyrone Ebuehi and Samuel Kalu became unavailable for the game.
With all these unfortunate incidents Nigeria still secured a 1-2 victory over Cape Verde, the win is very much welcomed but how was Gernot Rohr able to win this well organized Cap Verde team.
Well after analyzing the incidents that unfolded before the game, in the game and after the game, here are four reasons why Nigeria was able to secure the Impressive victory over their hosts.
Knowing he has a depleted squad Gernot Rohr did very well to select a very for formidable starting XI, although the selected team didn't have the star names like Iwobi and Ndidi but they were able to hold it together, the addition of Ejuke Chidera was also a master stroke, personally I would have started Henry Onyekeru ahead of him but Gernot Rohr knew better.
Nigeria played very well but they hardly created any clear cut chances, although this might be as a result of Iwobi and other players missing, basically Nigeria won the game because Cape Verde shot themselves.
Osimhen scored because a Cape Verde player nearly scored an own goal forcing his goalkeeper to make an untidy save, Osimhen pounced on the loose ball to score and equalize for Nigeria.
The second goal was a bizarre own goal that saw a Cape Verde defender loft a back pass above his own goalkeeper, Nigeria did little in terms of creativity.
Sticking with Osimhen was a wise decision from Gernot Rohr, the German tactician got it spot on as the Napoli striker scored a goal, and his constant pressure on the opposition defenders forced them into errors.
Even with the errors, Cape Verde could have secured a win or at least a draw but they were very wasteful in front of goal, in the closing stages of the game they had a couple of clear cut chances but they failed to utilize them.
Nigeria played brilliantly but they wouldn't have been able to secure the victory had Cape Verde didn't make some sill errors whilst also failing to take their chances.
