Orlando Pirates quest to become the first South African club to win both the CAF champions league title as well as the CAF Confederation Cup title came to a disappointing end after losing the final against Moroccan club RS Berkane in a final that was played in Nigeria.
Pirates who started the match on the front foot as they dominated the match especially in the first half, but were guilty of missing numerous opportunities through Deon Hotto and some very good goalkeeping from the RS Berkane goalkeeper. Credit to them as they held on to keep Pirates from scoring and managed to take Pirates all the way to extra time.
The match came to life in the fourth minute of extra time when RS Berkane were awarded a penalty by the Video Assistant Referee(VAR) after Thabang Monare was spotted to have fouled a RS Berkane player as VAR intervened. The penalty was then awarded by the Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe which El Fahli converted to give the Morrocan club the lead.
But as the penalty was scored by the Morrocan club, it showed one of their players inside the penalty box as the penalty was being taken. Pirates could feel hard done by this as VAR couldn't spot this. According to the law, a retake of the penalty should have been made had the VAR team spotted the encroachment. And Pirates questioned the usage of VAR on how come it never spotted it.
Pirates though, continued to search for the equaliser and they eventually found one with 3 minutes left in game, as the impressive Thembinkosi Lorch found the bottom corner to send the match into a penalty shoot out. Lorch went from hero to villain in the shoot out, as his spot kick was the only one that didn't find the back of the net as Pirates lost 5-4 to hand the Morrocan club their second CAF Confederation Cup title, having won their first in 2020.
Pirates fans took to social media to voice their displeasure at the penalty incident, with Supersport TV commentator Reggie Ndlovu posting the encroachment picture and agreed with the Pirates fans that the was supposed to have been a retake. This is what they had to say.
