It is not something you hear often. However, a South African born striker has turned down the chance to don Real Madrid's jersey.
Andras Nemeth is not a name you would consider South African. However, the 17 year old striker is Tafelsig, Cape Town born. Born to a South African mother and a Hungarian father.
Andras Nemeth has been hailed as one of the best talents to come out of Belgium and at 17 years old, he already has two seasons of first team football at KRC Genk. Genk are one of the two biggest Belgian teams alongside Club Brugge, which Percy Tau was loaned to.
In Europe, Nemeth has already been hailed as a great talent. Before signing a professional contract with KRC Gent in November 2018, he had offers from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and a host of other top European clubs. However, he chose to stick to sign with KRC Genk.
KRC Genk have in the past produced world class talent such as Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Yannick Carrasco (Atletico Madrid), Wilfried Ndidi (Leicester City) and Kevin De Bruyne (Leicester City). Their investment in Andras Nemeth shows how highly KRC Genk think of the South African born striker.
The teenage striker is already a Hungarian youth international and helped his adopted nation qualify for the U17 Fifa World Cup by scoring 3 goals in 5 games at the U17 UEFA Euros.
Although, Andras Nemeth plays for the Hungarian national youth team. He is still able to play for South Africa's national team. Will the South African Football Association be able to prize away the talent everyone is raving about from Hungary? It remains to be seen.
