The Kenya Meteorological Department has been working in conjunction with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in the provision of accessible meteorological and climatological information to the general public in accordance with the World Meteorological Organization convention. The meteorological department has been successful in the provision of timely warnings on weather changes through the creation of an efficient telecommunications system for rapid collection and dissemination of meteorological information.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has provided a five day weather forecasting updates whose validity ranges from 27th to 31st January 2022. According to the forecast, rainfall is expected over several parts of the country in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South RIft Valley and the South Eastern Lowlands.
1.The Lake Victoria Basin, The Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Central and Southern Rift Valley; (Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot counties),
Morning showers accompanied with sunny intervals are likely to be experienced over several places during the forecast period. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are also expected over all these areas throughout the forecast period. The nights are set to be cloudy with a chance of showers occurring over a few places during the forecast period. The maximum temperatures are likely to be at 28°C while minimum temperatures are likely to be at 08°C within the forecast period.
2.The Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County; (Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Muranga, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi counties),
These areas are likely to receive sunny intervals during the first half of the forecast period with a chance of showers over a few areas during the second half of the forecast period. The nights are likely to be cloudy with a chance of night showers over a few areas towards the end of the forecast period. The maximum temperatures are likely to range between 27°C to 28°C while minimum temperatures range from 4°C to 6°C.
The rest of the areas not mentioned here are likely to receive sunny and dry conditions towards the end of January 2022. The updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department have helped in the saving of lives, protection of property and in the conservation of the natural environment.
