Dr Mary Malahlela, the first Female Black Doctor in the country who graduated from Wits University in a Male only Class in the dark days of apartheid. The school named after her in Dobsonville is dilipidated and in dissaray, when we tell comrades in Education of her contribution they look away because in their eyes she was not an activist when she worked pro-bono across Soweto taking care of injured activists. Imagine how Dr Malahlela can become a beacon of hope to young girl children to pursue Maths and Science. She is a symbol of resilience and tenacity, we women who are free today will never comprehend the injustices black women were subjected too and they survived. 1994 truly liberated us, with its shortcomings we are a lucky generation taken out of Egypt and I see myself through women such as Dr Mary.
