On 23 June 2022, the East London Magistrates' Court granted R1000 bail each to Mahlubandile Nqoma, 49, and Theophillus Mncedi Pato also aged 49. This follows their arrest for fraud and theft on the same day by the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in East London.

The pair is believed to have passed themselves off as estate agents between 2016 and 2018. It is alleged that they displayed and sold homes that were not for sale. Although the victims were urged to transfer money into the suspects' bank accounts, they did not receive their homes as a result.

The Hawks were informed of the situation, and they launched an investigation that ended with the two people being taken into custody. They appeared in court for a brief time and were granted bail. According to the investigation, the victims received unfair payments totaling more than R800,000.

The case was continued until 8 July 2022, to provide for legal representation.
