There was a mild drama yesterday in Abuja, between the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru and lawmakers investigating the arms and ammunition purchased by the Nigeria Army.
The House of Representatives ad hoc committee on arms, who are currently reviewing the purchase, use, and control of arms, ammunition, and related hardware by the military, paramilitary, and other law enforcement agencies in Nigeria during the session, had a fallout with the army chief.
The Chief of Army Staff was told to speak further on a document which he presented to the lawmakers, but he refused and asked the committee to check the self-explanatory documents themselves.
The Army Chief insisted that he is definitely not the right person to speak on arms and ammunition purchased by his predecessors.
A House of Representative member for Delta State, Ejiro Ogene, frowned at the manner the Army Chief responded and had to tell him that the “National Assembly is the House of the Nigerian people and everyone in public office works for Nigerians.”
In a video posted online by Channels TV, it shows the moment the COAS had the explosive session with the lawmakers.
A social media commentator, Kayode Ogundamisi, in reaction to the video, said that the Chief of Army Staff‘s combative introduction was pointless.
That it’s high time we separated the individuals (Lawmakers) from the institution.
Mr Kayode also went further to counter Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru's excuse of taking over 2 months ago. According to him, the excuse does not make sense, because he didn’t join the Army 2 months ago.
