Ministry of Education Should Try This to Avoid Reopening of Primary and Secondary Schools[Opinion]

According to WHO reports, reopening of the economy should come when the COVID-19 positivity rate falls below 4%. Currently it stands above 10%. This makes it unsafe for learners to be in school.

However, Education CS Prof George Magoha had earlier asked parents to be prepared for reopening of schools on 10th of May. This may face challenges with the increasing number of coronavirus cases. The ministry should therefore revisit their calender to ensure safety of learners.

With less than 3 weeks to beginning of a 9 week term 3, the Ministry of Education should employ use of technology in delivering services to the learners. To achieve this, MoE should try the following;

1. Train facilitators(teachers) on online teaching methods.

2. Carry out a civic education across the country on how to use zoom or Google classroom to facilitate learning.

3. Provide free or subsidized data bundles to parents across the country which will be used for purpose of learning.

4. Carry out online evaluation of the learners.
