On Saturday, armed men robbed a vaccination team stationed at a taxi rank in Soshanguve, Tshwane, of their cellphones and tablets.
At around 09:00, the men emerged from a white Toyota Quantum and robbed the team at gunpoint while they were inoculating people at the Wonder City taxi rank's vaccination pop-up site, according to the Gauteng health department.
"The attack on [the] Tshwane District vaccination team is strongly condemned by the Gauteng Department of Health. The perpetrators made off with the team's vaccination program equipment, which included three tablets, one smartphone, and six cellphones "In a statement, it said.
"These senseless acts occurred at a time when the province is ramping up the vaccination program by activating more vaccination sites in all districts to ensure that as many people as possible are vaccinated."
No one was hurt, and the incident was investigated as a robbery.
A district health vehicle carrying mobile site equipment and gazebos was hijacked in Chamdor, Kagiso on the West Rand, in another incident last month.
"Even during the pandemic, our healthcare workers remain the backbone of the health system, as they continue to play a critical role in vaccination program rollout. We urge everyone in society to cooperate with law enforcement and share any information they may have about the two incidents "According to the department.
