The Democratic Party (DP) has picked National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as its preferred presidential candidate to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in next year’s polls.

Led by the DP national chairman Mr Esau Kioni, the delegates said they had conducted due diligence and positively vetted who should lead the Mt Kenya region and the country after President Uhuru’s retirement.

“We seriously conducted due diligence and positive vetting on who should lead Mt Kenya region and Kenya and we have settled on Justin Biden Njoka Muturi as DP’s presidential candidate,” Kioni said at a local hotel in Nyeri town today.

The delegates were drawn from Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, Nairobi, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Nyandarua and Laikipia counties.

Kioni noted that Mr Muturi is a tested man and a man of integrity, a person who can lead the country to prosperity.

He termed Speaker Muturi as a committed public servant adding that the party will support him to the end. “We have heard him and believe he will go all through to the ballot box,” Kioni added.

The chairman invited Speaker Muturi to join the DP immediately, adding that there is no other presidential candidate better than him.

“We hereby invite him to join DP immediately,” Kioni said and at the same time urged DP members to fully support Muturi in his quest to be elected to State House.

Asked whether the Democratic Party is locking out other presidential candidates on its ticket, Kioni said the party is democratic and if more candidates present themselves, they will be subjected to nominations.

Speaking during the same occasion, DPs national young democrats chair Ms Mukami Wangui said the youths from the ten counties in the Mt Kenya region have identified Muturi as the only presidential candidate who can effectively address their challenges.

Ms Wangui asked Muturi not to be intimidated by anyone adding that young democrats across the country are backing him and that they will traverse the country to enlist more young democrats in the country as they embark on the journey to state house.
