The Government through the Health Ministry Cabinet Secretary, Mutahi Kagwe, had announced that there is a third wave of COVID-19 outbreak in the country on March 2021. This followed the reported high cases of infections in the country everyday.
Before this could happen many people were happy after the good news of the world having managed to get COVID-19 vaccines. Such vaccines included AstraZeneca vaccine from Britain and Sputnik V vaccine from Russia.
After these new high cases of COVID-19 infections were recorded in the country, the Government decided to lockdown 5 counties in the country that included Nairobi, Kajiado, Nakuru, Machakos and Kiambu. These counties were described as disease - infected areas because they were the leading counties with these high rates of infections. All schools were also directed to suspend learning activities where only candidates were allowed to continue with the exams and finish them. This forced universities, Tertiary and Vocational colleges and those in Medical Training Institutions to close until further notice. All these were announced by the President on 26th March, 2021.
Personally, I think the students and pupils are safer at school than at home because they can minimize movements at school than at home. This minimization of movement by them can reduce the virus infections. Therefore, the schools should reopen on the proposed dates to make students and pupils continue with their education well. However, the Government should make sure first that the schools have followed the Health Ministry protocols before reopening.
