President Samia Suluhu Hassan's government has today issued a statement, hinting worrying HIV situation in the country.

The government through the Ministry of Health has stated the approximate number of children who are being born while infected with HIV.

Minister for Health, Ummy Mwalimu, has stated that at least 6000 newly born babies are infected with HIV at birth.

Taking her concern on social media, Ummy Mwalimu said the country is recording such high figures of those infected at birth because expectant mothers are not taking enough measures during their gestation period.

She noted that pregnant mothers are failing to go for medical check-ups such as antenatal care, where mothers living with HIV are put on medication that helps them deliver HIV negative kids.

She has since asked all mothers to visit nearby clinics when expecting so that the proper medication is administered to them for their safety and that of their unborn babies

"Do you know ?? More than 6,000 babies in Tanzania are born with HIV each year. The goal of the government is to see that no child is born with HIV in the country.

"I encourage pregnant women to go to the clinic, get tested and for those living with HIV we will give them medicine to protect their babies," she affirmed.

Ummy Mwalimu is only a few months into the ministry of Health after a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Samia

She worked in the same ministry during John Pombe Magufuli's first term but did not appear on the cabinet list during Magufuli's second term

After his death, she was appointed by Samia to lead the Office of the President Ministry until last week when she was moved back to Health.
