The more you weigh, the more blood is needed for the supply of oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. As the amount of blood flow through your blood vessels raises, so does the pressure on your artery walls.

2. Not engaging in physical exercise

People who don't exercise regularly tend to have higher heart rates. The higher your heart rate, the harder your heart must function with each contraction and the stronger the force on your arteries. Not engaging in physical activity also makes your risk of being overweight worsen.

3. Using tobacco

Intake of tobacco makes your blood pressure rise temporarily. Also, the chemicals in tobacco can cause harm to the lining of your artery walls. This can make your arteries narrow and make your risk of heart disease rise. Secondhand smoke also can make your heart disease risk increase.

4. Excessive salt (sodium) in your diet

Excess intake of sodium in your diet can make your body retain fluid, which makes your high blood pressure risk increase.

5. Drinking too much alcohol

Too much intake of alcohol can damage your heart. Drinking more than one drink a day for women and more than two drinks a day for men may impact blood pressure levels. Alcohol should therefore be taken in moderate amounts.

6 Stress

Too much stress can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure. Stress-related habits like consuming more, using tobacco, or drinking alcohol can cause further increases in blood pressure.
