The People's Democratic Party may have got a clear chance to get more influence in Kano State ahead of the 2023 polls. The PDP lost the state in 2015 and since that time, it has been a futile endeavor to reclaim the big state. Now the PDP could utilise the chance and get more influence.
The power tussle in the Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress should be an avenue for the opposition party to launch itself to more limelight in the biggest state of the country (in term of voting strength). The ruling party is ensnared in a big crisis that involves its key leaders.
The only two things PDP needs to do is to get itself ready, and use the crisis to attract the APC leaders into the PDP and every other thing would be settled. Yes, the crisis is mainly between two factions. One is loyal to the state governor, Umar Ganduje, whose tenure ends in 2023. The other faction is loyal to former governor Ibrahim Shekarau.
The former governor has been working on a parallel line and he led some top National Assembly members from Kano State to form a faction. He has even said that he couldn't be forced out of the APC. And he was apparently referring to Ganduje, the incumbent governor.
The PDP can actually bring Ibrahim Shekarau back into the PDP. It should be clear to the former governor that he may not be able to defeat Ganduje even though he (Shekarau) has lots of top members. The leadership of the APC would definitely recognize the faction loyal to Ganduje.
The top PDP leaders in Kano State should approach Shekarau and his faction. It is true that the main goal of the top politicians would be directed towards the 2023 general elections. Meanwhile, the PDP can ask Shekarau to retain the senatorial ticket and he would nominate the deputy governorship candidate of the party.
Once the PDP brings Shekarau to its camp, the All Progressives Congress would be weak. A party is strong because of the top personalities it gets. And if APC can lose the former governor and his loyalists, then, the APC may not be able to win the 2023 polls in Kano State.
The bitter rivalry between Mr. Ganduje and Shekarau should be an opportunity for the PDP to gather itself and get ahead of the APC in Kano State. As a matter of fact, the division in the APC can affect the prospects of the party in the next polls.
