Suicide is the process of inflicting death on oneself. Over many years, there has existed a debate amongst Christians on whether it is a sinful act or not. In the Bible, there are many incidences where prominent people such as Saul, Judas and Abimelech committed suicide. In this article, we are going to outline some of those verses.
1) Ecclesiastes 7:17 ESV
"Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time."
2) 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV
"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."
3) 2 Samuel 17:23 ESV
"When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey and went off home to his own city. He set his house in order and hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his father."
4) Matthew 27:3-5 ESV
Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
5) 1 Samuel 31:4 ESV
Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it.
6) Judges 16: 29-30 KJV
Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, 30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
Based on these verses, we can see how various people who had devoted their lives to serving God chose to die on the verge of their crisis instead of turning to God. As Christians, it is essential that we surrender our lives to God as he is the giver of life and also the taker.
