At the end of the normal time plus additional minutes yesterday, Nigerian fans inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium were short of words, those watching from home through their TV sets were livid. Every Nigerian football fan had just witnessed one of the biggest upsets in the history of Nigerian football.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played host to the Wild Beast of Central African Republic in match-day three of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers only to be shocked to a 1-0 defeat.

Despite parading a good chunk of star players who ply their trade across some of the biggest clubs in Europe, the Super Eagles couldn't even muster a single shot on target against one of the lower-ranked teams in Africa.

On the latest FIFA ranking which was released on the 16th of September 2021, Nigeria ranks 34th in the world and 5th in Africa. Meanwhile, the Central African Republic is 124th in the world and 32nd in Africa.

This means that Nigeria is 90 and 27 places above CAR in the world and continental rankings respectively.

Based on players quality, pedigree, and the fact that it was a home fixture, the odds were in favour of Nigeria, but yesterdays result proves once again that football is not played on paper.

The return fixture will take place in three days, and the fans will be hoping for a better result.
