It is quite unfortunate that the Southeastern part of Nigeria that used to enjoy a certain level of peace, is now slowly turning into a warzone. The so called "Unknown gunmen" have continued to terrorize the region, leading to the loss of many lives and property.

Southeast governors

According to news report, 2 traditional rulers were killed during an attack by gunmen in Imo State, on Monday 19th of October. This is one of many high-profile killings that have been carried out by gunmen in the Southeast, hence, the need for southeast governors to seek new strategies to stop the activities of unknown gunmen in the region.

As an opinion, adopting some of the strategies that Gov. Nyesom Wike has used to neutralize tough criminal gangs of kidnappers, cultists and separatist leaders in River State, could help in apprehending these notorious gunmen.

Gov. Nyesom Wike

When Nyesom Wike assumed office as the Governor of River State, he warned criminals and cultists to leave the state or face the death penalty. To further execute his order, he placed bounties on the heads of notorious criminals, and this led to the arrest and neutralization of so many criminal gangs in the state.

On one occasion, Governor Wike placed an outrageous sum of N640 Million bounty on 32 cultists ( N20 Million on each), for anyone who could provide vital information that would lead to their arrests. Source: Vanguard

On each of the successful arrests, Wike fulfilled his promise by rewarding those who provided vital information that led to the arrests. As a matter of fact, some of those criminals were apprehended within a month after the bounty was placed on them.

Placing a bounty on the heads of the unknown gunmen would motivate civilians and security operatives to source for, and provide useful information that would be used to neutralize them all.
