Several Soldiers Feared Dead In Lamu Ahead Of President Uhuru Kenyatta Visit

Several Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers are feared dead while dozen others were injured when a patrol vehicle they were travelling in ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected Al-Shabaab militants in Baure, Lamu East.

Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said the number of casualties remains unknown as the area is remote.

A source said there were intelligence reports that some elements were planning an attack after the month of Ramadhan.

"There has been an insurgency among the Ogaden tribe living across the Kenya-Somali border opposed to the construction of the wall. We suspect they are behind the attack," said the source.

He said security has also been enhanced along the Lamu-Garsen-Garissa-Isiolo routes, the latest transport corridor in the country, expected to connect Kenya to Ethiopia and South Sudan while opening up the northern region of the country.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) which will run the new ultra-modern facility has been conducting dry runs at the port in what is said to be final tests to ensure everything is on course.
