“Congratulations to Kirk on his second consecutive award as the DR. BOBBY JONES BEST GOSPEL/INSPIRATIONAL AWARD at the BET Awards.
He remains one of the industry's most creative innovators, pushing Gospel music in unexpected directions. It was fantastic to watch this year's concert go out with an explosive collaborative performance with Lil Baby. Such an amazing musical heritage is still alive and well in these days.
Kirk Franklin and Lil Baby took the 2021 BET Awards to new heights as they started the program with their upbeat collaboration "We Win" on Sunday (June 27).
The duo, clad in matching white, were accompanied by a stage full of dancers and backup singers to deliver the song, which is the first single from the Space Jam: A New Legacy soundtrack, which was released on May 21. During the concert, gospel singer Franklin delivered his lines with strength and emotion, whereas Lil Baby was more restrained.
Franklin and Lil Baby were backed up by Franklin's trademark gospel choir and band, who danced along with Lil Baby as he rapped.
The performance gave the awards a celebratory mood from the jump, one that was only amplified by this year’s live audience. The celebrities and guests clapped along to Franklin and Lil Baby in what felt like an anointing to start off the live show after last year’s virtual awards.
Taraji P. Henson will host the 2021 BET Awards, which this year recognized and acknowledged Black women's cultural influence. The performance was broadcast live from Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater in front of a live audience.
