Parliament resumed today as the Plenary returned from Ho where they discussed the import of the Budget presented by the Caretaker Finance Minister, Osei Kyei Mensah. The Budget sought to impose some taxes on Ghanaians as a way to curb some of the debts the country had incurred. There were also some reliefs for Ghanaians.

It can be recalled that on Joy News’ ‘PM Express’ yesterday, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase Ayirebi and Minister for Information debated Cassiel Ato Forson, MP for Ajumako-Enyan Esiam and a ranking member of the Finance team. At the debate Kojo admitted that Ghanaians will pay for the freebies they enjoyed in water and electricity last year.

Today, Tuesday, March 16, 2021, Oppong Nkrumah and Dr. Ato Forson renewed rivalry as both debated the budget for their party sides. According to Oppong Nkrumah, the new taxes are necessary to free the country from its debts so as to place of Stability. Ato Forson however disagreed.

“We want to send a strong message to the Minister of Finance that until these anomalies are corrected we will not be part of the passing of this budget. Until we track the way we accumulate debt and we decide to tickle ourselves, we will destroy ourselves.

I call on the Minister of Finance to correct the anomalies. I challenge the Finance Minister to show me one country that has a messed up fiscal table like we have” Ato Forson said.

It is yet to be seen what the house will agree on as other members of the house are still debating on the pros and cons of the budget.
