Watford welcomed Liverpool to Vicarage Road on matchday eight of the 2021/2022 English Premier League season after gaining seven points from their seven outings so far in the league. They were in the 15th position of the EPL table going into this fixture after sacking their manager following a run of poor performances.
Liverpool on the other hand was one point adrift of league leaders Chelsea who are on 16 points after winning their last match against Southampton. Jurgen Klopp made three changes to the starting lineup that drew 2-2 with Manchester City at their home soil with Kelleher coming in for Allison, Firminho replacing Diogo Jota and Nabir Keita stepping in for Curtis Jones.
Watford was hoping to repeat the scenario that occurred the last time Liverpool visited Vicarage road in which they hammered the Reds 3-0 to end their 44 games unbeaten record but couldn't do much in the first half as Sadio Mane took the early lead in the 9th minute of the game after a lovely pass from Mohamed Salah.
Mane's brilliant finish marked his landmark EPL goal for the Reds and also made him the first African player in the history of the Premier League to score 100 EPL goals without any from the penalty spot-kick. He joined the likes of Emile Heskey and Les Ferdinand as the only players to have achieved such a feat.11
An incredible record as this is a memorable moment in the life of Sadio Mane both as a Liverpool player and as an African. Before now, Didier Drogba was recognized as the only African player to have reached the 100 EPL goal but teammate Mohamed Salah joined him a few weeks ago in clinching the landmark goal.
And now he has followed it up with another historic record of becoming the first African ahead of the two iconic players to hit the benchmark without a single penalty goal. What a record and congratulations to him.
